I recently had the opportunity to stay at a beautiful luxury hotel, The Waldorf Astoria. This hotel managed to create a neutral space that was still interesting. It illustrated some simple ways to inject natural, neutral colors into your own home.

The lobby: Tone on tone stripes, lots of neutral upholstery, and pops of color. |
The floor of the hotel was also a stripe. They used natural stone, and a mosaic stone tile to create the stripes.
The walls were wood. I think this look really lends itself to many different design styles. I could see this in a modern room, cottage/ country look, or a traditional space.
